Yves Rossy's jetpack loops a hot air balloon, looks great doing it (video)

Looks like Swiss daredevil Yves Rossy is back to the, well, daredeviltry. On November 5, 2010, the self-described Jetman lept off a platform attached to the side of the Esprit Breitling Orbiter hot air balloon and, after reaching an altitude of 2,400 meters (7,874 feet), came back to loop around the thing twice. He was aided in his endeavor by a new, smaller wing (two meters across) with four jets, and executed the maneuvers using only his body movements to steer. Afterward, he deployed his parachute and landed in Denezy, in the Swiss canton of Vaud. We might also add that we tried to get one of these devices for an Engadget Show giveaway, but our lawyers seem to think it's a terrible idea. Video after the break.

Bacarobo 'stupid robot' contest is back, and it's hilarious (video)

Our love of tech, gadgets, and anything, really, with blinking lights means that while we certainly value usability and quality in our consumer electronics, there will always be a place in our hearts for the utterly useless. And we're definitely not alone here, as the popularity of the annual Bacarobo (stupid robot) contest will tell you. This year's event was held in Budapest, Hungary, and featured a number of the silliest robots you've never seen before -- all designed to get a laugh. The contest is judged in true hackneyed Gong Show-esque fashion with an applause meter, and the winner received a €2,000 ($2,700 USD) prize. And that's nothing to laugh at! But enough chatter: peep the video after the break to see for yourself.

Lenovo slips out 12.5-inch IdeaPad U260 ultraportable, hopes you'll notice

By Darren Murph posted Nov 9th 2010 7:57AM Well, what have we here? In the sea of me-too ultraportables, it looks as if Lenovo is doing its darnedest to mix things up with a somewhat unorthodox screen size. The leaked IdeaPad U260 hasn't been confirmed by the mother company, but word on the street has it rocking a 12.5-inch display, 0.71-inch thickness and a total weight of just 3.04 pounds. Naturally, it's living life sans an optical drive, and we're told that it'll ship with an Ultra Low Voltage Core i3 or Core i5 CPU. There's no ExpressCard slot, but you will spot a four-cell battery, Bluetooth 2.1, VGA / HDMI outputs, WiFi, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive and a couple of semi-vivacious color options (Mocha Brown and Clementine Orange). Mum's the word on a price, but you can catch one more glimpse of the heretofore unannounced rig just after the break.

Forrester: e-book sales to hit nearly $1 billion this year, $3 billion by 2015

By Donald Melanson posted Nov 9th 2010 4:23PM There's no denying that e-books are already big business, and market research firm Forrester is now offering some pretty impressive numbers that show just how big it already is, and how much bigger it will get in the next few years. The firm surveyed some 4,000 people and found that while just seven percent of those actually read e-books, they still bought enough of them to translate to $966 million in sales this year -- a number that's projected to grow to $3 billion by 2015. As for the reading habits of that seven percent, Forrester found that they "read the most books and spend the most money on books," and that they read 41 percent of their books in digital form. That doesn't necessarily mean that they use actual e-readers, though -- a full 35 percent apparently do most of their e-book reading on a laptop, followed by 32 percent on a Kindle, 15 percent on an iPhone, 12 percent on a Sony e-reader, and ten percent on a netbook. Interestingly, but perhaps unsurprisingly, Kindle users seem to be the biggest boosters of e-books -- they do 66 percent of all their reading in digital form.

Cool Reasons to Buy the All New Kindle

Amazon has been one of the places to buy things online safe and quick. If you ask Amazon then each and every employee of the company would say the best product ever will be the Kindle e-book reader. I would say that kindle is the best e-book reader in the market now. It is becoming really hard now to keep things in a place and organize them properly around the corner. There are loads of paper stuffs coming out for everything so it really becomes a tedious job for you to organize things. I really forgot the place where I kept my last month phone bill and I am searching it still. Kindle e-book reader relaxes you from that kind of troubles as it makes things easy as ever.

One of the best products of Amazon is the all new Kindle which has stolen the hearts of many. The all new gadget has come up with a sleek design and brand new colors as well. The new colors make this one more adorable than its predecessor. The next best thing I love is the size of the machine as it is less when compared to its elder brother. It weighs only 8.5 ounces which helps me in holding it hands for hours when I read. You need not carry thousands of books to read hundreds of pages anymore as all can be brought inside the Kindle. If you want to connect to internet then the new one makes that for you as well. The 3G and WI-FI present helps is accessing the internet pretty easily and comfortably as well.

There is no doubt that this gadget is a must in each and every home. I would say that this machine will occupy the desk of each and every home in the year 2015.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 detailed: 512 CUDA cores, 1.5GB of GDDR5 on 'world's fastest DX 11 GPU' (update: video!)

It might not be November 9 all around the world yet, but NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 has already had its spec sheet dished out to the world, courtesy of CyberPower's seemingly early announcement. The new chip will offer a 772MHz clock speed, 512 processing cores, and a 192.4GBps memory bandwidth, courtesy of 1.5GB of GDDR5 clocked at an effective rate of 4GHz. CyberPower is strapping this beast into its finest rigs, and for additional overkill it'll let you SLI up to three of them within one hot and steamy case. Now let's just wait patiently for midnight to roll around and see what the reviewers thought of NVIDIA's next big thing.

Update: CRN has a $499 price for us and a recital of NVIDIA's internal estimate that the GTX 580 bests the GTX 480 by between 20 and 35 percent. It seems, however, that the embargo for this hot new slice of silicon is set for early tomorrow morning, so check back then for the expert review roundup.

Update 2: Lusting to see one on video? How about two side by side? Skip past the break for the eye candy [Thanks, Rolly Carlos!].

FaceIt-3GS brings FaceTime to your jailbroken 3GS

Ah, the beautiful, ever-useful jailbreak and the developers that make it worthwhile. It's already unlocked the magic of FaceTime over 3G, and now it's making FaceTime capable with any old iPhone 3GS handset (thanks to the iPhoneIslam Team, who did the heavy lifting). Of course, lacking a front facing camera, the resulting video chat might be a little short on faces, but the functionality certainly isn't hurting anybody. Right, Apple? Hit up the app on Cydia and start streaming to your heart's content, and if you're wary there's a demo video after the break.

How to Have Disruptive Ideas For Product Innovation

The British electrical plug was invented in 1946. It's the largest plug in the world. It comes from a time when computers filled rooms and radios were the size of kitchen units. The only time the average person carried an electrical gadget round with them was when they moved house.

Nowadays gadgets don't sit quietly in the corner. They expect three foreign holidays a year and come with us to work, rest and play. In return, they've been on a crash diet and what used to fill a room, now sits comfortably in your pocket.

So it's strange that it's only this year, that a designer won an award for re-inventing the venerable but massive British plug into something altogether more slimline and portable. Why did it take 64 years to invent a better one? More importantly, why didn't any of the rest of us have that idea?

Listen to what nobody says

Henry Ford once said:

"If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses"

Unvoiced customer needs are everywhere, but they're hard to find. No British customer has ever said to a product designer "I'd like a more portable electric plug please."

Instead the re-inventor of the British plug, designer, Min Kyu-Choi, had an experience. He scratched his MacBook Air laptop on its plug realising in the process that the world's thinnest laptop still uses the world's thickest connector.

Min Kyu-Choi had stumbled upon a disruptive idea by discovering an unmet, unvoiced customer need.

So how do you mass-produce disruptive innovation?

The simple answer is: have experiences, and reflect on them. Creating an innovative new product requires an inductive leap.

The best way to trigger an inductive leap is to have a direct experience. The easy part of that is that we all have experiences continuously. When my alarm goes off, that's a customer experience. When I get on the train, it's a customer experience. Buying my morning coffee - an experience. They all come bundled up with satisfaction and frustration.

The hard part is noticing the response rather than accepting the "how things are-ness" of it. One of the best ways is to keep a record of what happens - mark up every experience on a timeline and plot your emotional response. Not taking problems for granted is the first step towards great product design.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 reviewed: 'what the GTX 480 should have been'

You saw the key specs slip out a little ahead of time, now it's the moment we've all been waiting for: the GeForce GTX 580 has been thoroughly benchmarked to see if its claim to being "the world's fastest DirectX 11 GPU" stands up to scrutiny. In short, yes it does. The unanimous conclusion reached among the reviewers was that the 580 cranks up the performance markedly relative to the GTX 480 -- with some citing gains between 10 and 20 percent and others finding up to 30 percent improvements -- while power draw, heat emissions, and noise were lowered across the board. ATI's AMD's Radeon HD 5870 wasn't completely crushed by the newcomer, but it was consistently behind NVIDIA's latest pixel pusher. Priced at $499, the GTX 580 is actually praised for offering good value, though its TDP of 244W might still require you to upgrade a few parts inside your rig to accommodate it, while current online prices are closer to $550. Anyhow, the pretty comparative bar charts await at the links below.

New Product Launch - The Basics

Just about everyone with a great idea for a new gadget dreams of launching a new product in the mass market. It used to be a lot easier for a small company to launch new products than it is today. Years ago, a small company with a new product or idea could start with neighborhood retailers, first building a local customer base and then fanning out across the region, the nation, or the globe. But the retail landscape has changed tremendously with huge chains with thousands of outlets dominating the market today. Over the last 15 years countless small chains and independent operators have either been swallowed up by their larger rivals or just gone belly up because they couldn't compete with the behemoths. This makes it much more difficult for small companies to launch their products because a) there are fewer retailers to approach and b) there are thousands of companies competing for the attention of fewer and fewer buyers.

Twenty years ago, trade shows could often be a cost-effective way to introduce a new product to thousands of potential buyers but like retail, the trade show industry has seen a wave of mergers, acquisitions and drop outs. A lot of the trade shows that used to cater to the small- and mid-sized operations have seen their attendance dwindle and lots of them have just disappeared entirely.

For example, the North American Men's Sportswear Buyers (NAMSB) show used to be one of the biggest apparel trade shows in the U.S. but now it's gone. For years, NAMSB was the trade show that retailers of all sizes attended to check out the latest and greatest upcoming styles. It was also where some now-famous names got their start in the mass market. At a NAMSB show (many) years ago a friend wanted me to meet the owner of a new company that she knew was going to be hot. We walked up to a small booth staffed with just one guy showing off his new t-shirt designs-his name was Stussy and a year or so later his company took off. For him, the NAMSB show was the ideal springboard to success. Today though, there are fewer shows to choose from and they're a lot more expensive, making them a bigger gamble. So if you're thinking about doing a trade show you'd best be prepared to do your homework, invest some money and do it right or you'll be setting yourself up for failure.

What does this mean to a small business with a great product or idea? What it means is that yes, it can be tough to launch a new product in the mass market but it also means that a company can hit the big time a lot faster today than in the past. So what is the secret to selling to Wal-Mart or other large retailers? For the novice, the answer is that there is no easy answer-launching a product in the mass market is not for the faint of heart but it can be done. The answer lies in doing your homework:

Know your business-how are you going to produce the product and how will you distribute it? Do you have the capacity (production and financial) to meet the demands of the mass market?
Know your product-what sets your product apart from the competition? What makes it unique? What is its special appeal?
Know your retailer-where does your product fit in the store and how are you going to display it? Research your target vendors-what are they looking for in new products? What is their process for reviewing new vendors?
Know your customer-who is going to buy your product and why are they going to buy it?
Know your marketing plan-how are you going to get the word out about your product to your customers?

Knowing the answers to these questions will help prepare you and your company for successfully launching your new product in the mass market.

    Toy Story [VHS]

Toy Story [VHS]There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

    Licenses For New Inventions

New inventions in almost every field are pretty common these days. With the increase in intelligent and more radical approach to life a lot of people are turning their ideas into successful businesses. The process of inventing a product and its successful implementation is not as easy as it seems.

Whenever a person gets an idea for an invention, the first step that needs to be taken is to apply for a patent for that particular product. Technically it is called as licensing patent rights but is more commonly known as licensing the invention. The inventor has the option of completing all the procedures himself or to take advantage of professional invention licensing companies. The inventor can license the patent right to a particular manufacturer and then collect royalty. The United States patent office grants thousands of patent licenses every year for different inventions.

It is essential to consult an experienced lawyer before signing any license agreement. The license agreement includes provisions for upfront payments, royalty percentages and other infringement issues. Inventors can either give an exclusive license to a single party or a non-exclusive license to more than one party. Its then essential to make a list of potential manufacturers by visiting product related tradeshows, local stores, libraries and reference magazines. Certain online manufacturer databases can also be used to find an appropriate company.

A professionally written, brief marketing letter needs to be sent to each company for their approval. The letter should have information regarding the selling or licensing of patent rights of the invention to the manufacturer company. It is also advisable to attach a professional looking colored brochure of the product, along with the marketing letter to make a good impression. A specific website can also be designed for providing more information about the product and its inventor, which gives a professional appearance to the project. This will surely increase the chances of success for the product.

Thus, it is essential for the inventor to take great care to safeguard his interests and follow all legal and professional measures.

YouTube Remote app released, controls Leanback on GTV or PC from your Android phone

By Richard Lawler posted Nov 9th 2010 4:47PM We weren't completely in love with Google TV's YouTube Leanback experience when we gave the platform a run through, but that could change now that the YouTube Remote app has been released to the Android Market. Users pair the devices simply by signing into YouTube Leanback on the TV or PC and the app on the phone with the same account, then select a video on the phone and send it to the bigger screen with a press of a button. At least, that's how it should work. TechCrunch got a hands on with the new app and a new Topics sorting system for the site during a demo and found some potential, however trying it on one of our devices elicited a slew of crashes before we eventually got everything synced up and working. QR code's after the break so you can have a go of your own.

Update: Once we got everything rolling, we were able to get a better impression of the app. While it was a bit slow to open on our Galaxy S phone, once it is up, it worked smoothly, scrolling side to side through various queues of types of content and our favorites list. While the task of pulling up Leanback in a browser window or even on a Google TV device makes it ill-suited for viewing just one video at a time, where it excels is building a up a queue of videos and sending them over all at once. It will work on multiple screens at the same time as well, but there's no Airplay-style syncing to be had, if one of them starts to slow down or buffer it will simply continue lagging behind, and without any volume controls or ability to reahc other functions, you'll still need to keep other remotes handy.
